Surfing in Mexico
Bienvenido a Mexico! Mexico is on the most northern border of Central America and is therefore located between the US and Guatemala. Mexico is lucky to be located on two different coastlines: The Pacific Ocean in the west and the Gulf of Mexico, in the east. Especially the Pacific side offers very good surfing conditions. Mexico is a much diversified country; the indigenous culture and the western lifestyle melt together to form a fascinating mixture.
Also historic sites from ancient cultures, like the Mayas or the Aztecs, are well preserved and are really worth a visit. The landscape of Mexico is very varied: Beautiful beaches on the east coast and subtropical rain forest, as well as mountain ranges of up to 5700 meters in height.
If you enjoy diving you should make a trip to Yucatan to visit the fascinating under water caves.
Due to its large size and much diversified topography Mexico has a number of different climate zones: The tropical and humid southeast, winter rains in the northwest and in the Baja California and alpine conditions in the mountain regions.
You can travel the country throughout the year. The coldest months are from December till February. Mexico is affected by hurricanes, from July till October, which can hit the country and cause considerable devastation.
Due to 4,000 kilometres of Pacific coast Mexico offers a vast amount of surf spots. A few of them are world famous such as the Mexican Pipeline in Puerto Escondido. But there are so many other spots, which are un-crowded and that you can surf with just yourself and a few others that it’s really worth a visit to Mexico.
The Baja California is quick and easily accessible from the US and offers some top spots. The best season for Mexico is in the winter when the winter swells hit the northern coast.
Best season for beginner: September – May
Best season for advanced surfer: June – October
Crowd factor: High at the well-known spots
Many flights arrive via Mexico City. The destination there is the Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México (MEX).
