Uruguay, often also called the Switzerland of South-America, is located between Argentina in the south and Brazil in the north. It further is the smallest Spanish speaking country of South-America. Characteristic for this country are its charming population and beautiful landscape: typical for Uruguay are the Pampa in the centre of the country and the endless beaches on the coast.
Especially worth to visit is the thermal-spring in the northeast that is especially suitable for surfer after a hard day on the board. Who is not being seasick should also take one of the breathtaking whale watching trips close to the coast. In the cities the influence of the Spanish colonial times is still evident. Through this the cities spread a lot of charm and invite to stay for a while and have a coffee. As travel destination Uruguay is so far unknown – as you can see this is a major loss!
In the north of Uruguay you will a subtropical climate, the south instead is rather moderate. The winters are rather mild and the summer by trend chilly, especially when the Pamperos blow from the southwest of country. There is actually no real rainy season in Uruguay; the rain spreads out over the whole year. The best time to visit the country is the South American wintertime, the month from January to February are usually the warmest.
Whoever surfs in Uruguay usually doesn’t have to share the waves with a lot of people. On the more than 200 kilometers of coast everybody, no matter if beginner or advanced, find a suitable spot. The most breaks can be found on the northeast coast, as this coastline is more open for the swells from the Atlantic.

The arrival to Montevideo in Uruguay usually occurs via the Aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco close to the capital Montevideo. There are direct flights from Porto Alegre, Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, Florianopolis, Santiago de Chile and Asuncion. There are lots of options to continue your journey by rental car, bus or cap.
Beside the international there are also several smaller airports, which can be approached from many South American cities. For travelers who plan on a longer stay in South America an Air-pass like the Mercosur-Airpass or the All American Airpass (including also North America) are advisable. For trip to more deserted areas a rental car is suitable.
