Surfing Argentina

Argentina, the land of the tango and vast cattle pastures is the second largest country on the South American continent.

Due to its length of about 3,500 km and its geographical position this country offers the traveller almost every imaginable natural beauty: From the  tropical areas in the north, to the steppes in the middle of Argentina and down to almost arctic Tierra del Fuego in the far south. Hence, the fauna and flora is also very different and is incredibly diverse.

Every climate zone provides new and exciting areas. The country can be visited the whole year round. However, Argentina is not yet geared to tourism so in spite of the unbelievable nature and scenery one can still find a great deal of solitude.

For surfing purposes mainly the north of the country is of interest. The further one travels to the south the less favourable are the conditions.

  • Big coastal regions
  • Relaxed locals
  • Steady conditions
  • Long journey
  • Partly very cold water
  • Windy

Argentina lies mainly in the shadow of the Andes. This means that the West winds lose more and more humidity the further eastward one travels. Also the temperature rises and the climate becomes drier. In the pampas region - in which Buenos Aires is located - and in Mesopotamia, the weather is temperate to semitropical and humid all year round.

Summers are muggy (average maximum temperature between 28 °C and 33 °C) and the winters chilly to mild (15 °C to 22 °C). The weather in general is very variable, intense rainfall and strong winds are common. Central and Northwest Argentina, the Sierras Pampeanas and the Chaco, are very dry in the winter. The summers are hot and relatively humid and the winters dry and mild. Most of the rainfall occurs during November and December. Patagonia is generally dry all year round but with a little bit more rain in winter than in summer.

Exceptions are the South Andes and the southern Tierra del Fuego, which are considerably more humid throughout the whole year. The temperatures are generally mild but there is a large variation between North and South.

Mainly the northern coast of the country up to the border of Uruguay is surfed. This region is, because of its gently sloping ocean bottom and its wide sandy beaches , the best suited for surfing. The further one travels to the south, the more unfavourable for surfing the coast gets and the water temperatures become colder.

The conditions in general are not bad, but still not comparable to other South American countries like Chile, Peru or Brazil. However: The chances to score are always there!

The best conditions are found in the morning or in the evening, when the wind is blowing offshore. During summertime, the waves near cities and all the known spots will be crowded.

The destination for all travellers who come from another continent is the Aeropuerto Internacional Ministro Pistarini (EZE), which is located 37 km in the southwest of Buenos Aires. From there, visitors have the possibility to travel on by hire car, bus or taxi.

Besides the international airport there are also numerous smaller airports which can be approached from many South American cities. For travellers who stay longer in South America, Airpasses like the Mercosur Airpass or the All America Airpass - which includes even North America – are reasonable options.

To carry on the travelling within Argentina, busses, inland flights or hire cars are available. A hire car is absolutely necessary if one wants to visit the more remote areas.
