Tonga, which means translated „South „is an archipelago which consists of 136 islands in the South Pacific. Only 36 islands are inhabited.

These are as the only ones in Oceania ruled by a monarchy. Even though the islands are of volcanic origin, Tonga can offer a few breathtaking coral riffs for divers and snorkelers.

Who isn’t easily seasick shouldn’t miss out to go on whale-watching tour.

  • Exotic nature
  • Friendly locals
  • Not very crowded
  • Chilly water from May till October
  • Partially challenging reef breaks
  • Relatively expensive

The average annual temperature is about 27 degrees and therefore compared to other South Sea Islands very comfortable. The climate is influenced by West-winds.

During the southern summer least rain falls, that’s why the months from May till November are the best time to travel.

The rainy season starts mostly in December and ends in April. In this period cyclones can develop in the South Seas, the offshoots of these can partially hit the island group.

Tonga is especially suitable for advanced surfer as there is no surf able beach breaks existing on the whole island.

The best time for a surf trip is from April till October, in this time powerful swells from the Antarctica hit the coast and the weather is less rainy.

Best season for beginner: November – March
Best season for advanced surfer: April – October

Crowd factor: low
