Spain offers the flexible and mobile visitors diversified vegetation and different climatic conditions and therefore lots of variety. The rather paltry and during the summer hot Mediterranean coast is ideal for a beach holiday.

On the north and west coast the temperatures are lower but therefore the vegetation is greener and more diversified. Further the wave conditions are much more constant in this region so that the Spanish Atlantic coast is an ideal location for a surfing holiday.

Thanks to the numerous bays you find many different types of waves, so that every surfer with every level of expertise can feel comfortable. Beside the numerous beaches Spain offers a long and interesting history as well as friendly locals and nice tapas.

The large cities offer an ideal balance and offer exciting sightseeing tours relaxation and recreation.

  • Beginner friendly waves (summer)
  • Cultural diversity and great landscapes
  • Friendly population
  • Crowded in the summer
  • High prices (tourist regions)
  • Wetsuit all year long necessary

The Spanish climate is depending on the region and therefore very different. Whereas the north of the country is covered in green and experiences mostly comfortable temperatures, the south faces especially in the summer high temperature and even water shortage issues.

The Spanish summer is especially in the heartland very hot. The average temperature is about 30 degrees at least. In the coast region sea breezes bring a bit milder air and make the temperature more comfortable. In the summer there are about 11/12 hours of sunshine and it rains very rarely.

During the winter the temperatures are about 17 degrees. Even though it is mostly sunny in the day and warm the nights can become quite frosty. Closer to the heartland it becomes increasingly colder, especially in the rocky regions like Grenada.

Spain belongs to one of the best surf destinations in Europe. The northwest coast of Spain and especially the region from the Gulf of Biscay, located at the French boarder down to Galicia, are ideal for surfing.

Considering only the waves the month from October till April are best suitable for surfing but water temperatures hardly rise above 13 degrees. Wetsuit, booties and cloves are therefore a must for a surf trip in the winter month in Spain. In the summer month the water temperatures raise only up to 16-19 degrees. Therefore you should also pack your wetsuit in the summer.

Best season for beginner: July – August
Best season for advanced surfer: October – February

Crowd factor: High in the summer month

Scheduled flights go regularly from all major European airports to Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga. Further smaller airports as Bilbao, Santiago or Seville are approached on a regular base.

Spain is also good accessible by car, train or bus. The highway infrastructure is on a high standard and allows a quick movement but is however therefore chargeable.
