Europe was infected with the surfing bug quite recently with surfing arriving in the early 60’s. This amazing continent offers ideal travelling facilities, good waves and lots of culture. It’s got many truly excellent spots for all levels of surfer and surfing normally takes place on the western coasts of Europe.

Here the climate is very moderate due to the influence of the Gulf Stream and you can surf all year long. You will need to wear a wetsuit and often boots gloves and hoods in the winter months of course, in the more northern countries.

Europe offers a lot of culture and if your flexible and have some spare time can visit cities and towns full of fantastic historic sights and places of interest. Many cities are incredibly ancient and date back well over a 1,000 years.

Generally the climate in Europe can be described as moderate. The west of the continent is ,due to the influence of the Gulf Stream ,not as varied in temperature throughout the year as the rest of the continent further inland.

Typical for the western region are the warm and slightly humid summers and mild winters. The further east you get the more you can feel the continental influence and also the difference in temperature during the season’s increases and the summers are hotter and the winters are colder.

Surfing first came to the European continent during the 60’s and in this period people were mainly surfing on the Atlantic coast in Portugal, Spain, France and the United Kingdom.

This has changed massively during the last 10 years and even in countries without a coastline surfing has become popular. It’s not unusual for the land locked European surfer to make regular trips to the Western coasts.

In the winter and autumn swells from the North Atlantic can be especially powerful.

Europe has a sophisticated and well connected air travel infrastructure. Most flights operate through the main hubs of Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, Frankfurt or Helsinki.

Also Europe has a very well developed public transport system. When using trains however you should however check in advance if it’s possible to transport your surfing equipment.

Normally for short distances or longer stays it is advisable to rent or you could for an extended stay, buy a car.
