El Salvador is the smallest country of Central America; it has boarders with Honduras in the northeast, Guatemala in the west and borders the Pacific Ocean in the south. Its lovely beaches, with its amazing sunsets and its diversified landscape make El Salvador an increasingly popular destination for tourists over the last few years.

Several mountains and volcanoes shape the interior, which is often covered by dense tropical forest. This large area of untouched forest gives home to a fascinating flora and fauna, truly amazing in its diversity and beauty. In contrast to this peaceful natural world the capital of San Salvador is rather hectic.

However, it is worth a visit to this city, and with 3 Million inhabitants it’s one of the biggest cities in Central America. It also offers a lot of culture and history. The name of the city is taken from the volcano “San Salvador„ that’s close to the city.

The friendly inhabitants with their typical South American charm make every stay unforgettable. Also, when it comes to surfing, this country offers a lot of memorable experiences.

The climate in El Salvador is tropical and sees two seasons, a dry and a rainy season. The rainy season lasts from May till October. It normally rains at night during this season so long periods without rain can be found during the daytime.

The coastal regions are usually the warmest with temperatures between 22-32 degrees. In the interior temperatures vary far more. In the hottest periods of the year temperatures can rise up to 38 degrees but in the colder periods of the year temperatures can drop as low as 19 degrees and generally it can be said that the temperatures in the mountain areas are much lower.

El Salvador is small in size and does not have a very long coastline but you can find a few world class spots. Known for its long, right point breaks the country offers ideal surfing conditions. Also it has a lovely water temperature of 27 degrees on average.

The best conditions for surfing can be found in the months of June until October.  El Salvador has a lot of undiscovered surf spots that are just waiting for someone to ride them. Unfortunately the best wave conditions are during the rainy season.

Scheduled flights arrive in El Salvador regularly from all major airports, mostly with a stopover in the US cities of Miami, New York or Chicago. The “Aeropuerto Internacional Comalapa“ is located approximately 50 kilometres southeast of San Salvador and is known as a important hub for Central and South America. From this airport you can find daily flight connections to many US cities but also to many Central and South American cities.

The long distance of 50 kilometres from the airport to the city can be made relatively easy by using the well-established bus infrastructure or by one of its numerous taxis.

The major harbours of El Salvador are La Union, Acajutla and La Libertad.  It is possible to take a ship from La Union in El Salvador to San Lorenzo or Amapala in Honduras. Likewise there is a sea route to the Nicaraguan city Potosi. These passenger ships do not sail regularly and often it is necessary to rent private boats at, sadly, high prices.

Beside flight and ferry connections El Salvador is well connected by several international bus companies. These connect a number of Central American countries with each other.
