Many of the 7107 islands of the Philippines are still uninhabited and do not even have a name. Thanks to this fact a big share of the coral riffs are still intact. But also the water is still very clean in most places and the sandy beaches white and the rain forest untouched. In the same way rocky mountain ranges, the visitors can see sizzling waterfalls and uncountable protected animals.
Not to forget the extraordinary hospitable local Filipinos. The island state is can also score points due a diversified mix from modern big cities and small villages in which the time seems to have stopped. The several leisure and sports possibilities make the holiday for everyone a great experience. Many islands are suitable for surfing, snorkelling and swimming. But you can also just relax.
The Philippines are ruled by a tropical climate. There are three seasons: Rainy (monsoon) from June till October, rather chilly from November till February (No monsoon) and very hot from March till May in the lower areas. This can become extremely uncomfortable at times. The rain diminishes from east to west. The average daily temperature is about 27 degrees. Temperatures hardly drop below 21 degrees but also don’t rise over 33 degrees during the year.
From June till September typhoons can blow over the country. There are however no massive variations in temperature during the year. Only the amount of rainfall changes a lot. December till June is the best time to travel as typhoons can occur during the period from July till November that brings heavy storms and rain.
Especially the beaches on the eastern located islands of the Philippines are ideal for surfing, for example Catanduanes or Siargao. Especially famous is the world-class wave “cloud nine”, which became famous due to its concave right. There are however many good spots. The large amount of waves causes that there are not too many people on the line-ups as the surfer can spread out over the island.
Furthermore there are many spots, which are only accessible by boat, which also decreases the number of surfer. The wetsuit can also be left at home as the water temperatures are constant around 23-26 degrees. The best conditions can be found from August till September.
Best season for beginner: January – June
Best season for advanced surfer: August – December
Crowd factor: Higher on the well-known spots
The arrival at Cebu or Manila is several times a day with many airlines possible. On the Philippines Manila is the most important hub for almost all national flights as there are almost no direct flights between the single islands. From Manila you can take several flights to Cebu but also to Tagbilaran, Dumaguette, Coron and Caticlan as well as to many other small airports. The national flights in Manila go from the domestic airports. This airport is not far from the international airport but a organized transport is advisable as often no taxis are available.
Between the a little bit bigger islands ferries are operating. You should however make sure before you start your journey at what time the ferries depart as most of them only go once a day. The departing time is mostly reliable. On the islands itself many buses and taxis are available that transport you for small money to the desired destination.
